Today, the poor unfortunate soul who runs NBC’s NASCAR Twitter account is feeling the wrath of countless Jeff Gordon fans who are INFURIATED that a pool of NASCAR drivers don’t think that the !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! is one of the greatest to ever play the game drive a car in a counter clockwise fashion for several hours.

It all started with this informative tweet, declaring Jimmie Johnson as the best stock car driver of the post-running-from-the-ATF era (via NASCAR.com, ie “don’t blame us for this bullcrap”):

!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!

NASCAR fans, it turns out, take some of this stuff quite seriously. Pandemonium ensued.

!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!

!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!

!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!

It would be easy to keep posting tweets ala poll-induced rage, but I think you get the picture.

The funny part of all this malarky is that !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! . The guys that actually do this for a living. The people in the cars going in circles at 200 MPH. But, or course, it’s probably the idiot Millennials’ fault:

!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!

Never change, NASCAR fans. I mean, after you ditch the racism and confederate battle flag.

TBH I don’t really think of Jeff Gordon as a current era driver. He is older than Dale Jr. He is more of the Wallace era and Dale sr era drivers.

TO me he bridged the gap. Wallace and SR were well established when he came along in 93. Hell, Sr. had be racing for 14 years at that point.

I don’t normally get outraged but when I do it’s because Busch, Kyle presumably, is mentioned in the same breath as Gordon.

I hated Gordon for years, but that dude could drive the wheels off his car.

To further cement my rage, I would argue that Gordon is better than Johnson. Stupid “chase” garbage nonsense.

Given the level of competition relative to the era the raced, Sr. is #1, and Gordon is #2. Sr. is the only person I’ve ever heard as described as a driver who could beat you with a slower car.

I mean if we’re going with top 5 all- time then someone is going to be upset their driver isn’t included . Not to say they don’t have a point, Jeff’s definitely up there.

Lets also ignore the majority of his championships came from under Chad Knaus, maybe one of the cheat-iest crew chiefs of all time?

As someone who grew up basically as Gordon came on scene, he was unstoppable with Ray E vernham as chief. The T-Rex car?? They were pushing boundaries no one else was. Who knows how many they could have won if Evern ham hadn’t started his own garage.

He literally brought the sport mainstream, won Daytona 500 and Daytona 24 hr. He was damn good all around. JJ only has one road course win.

I will say there might be some merit to the youth comment. He struggled after the 2001 season with different crew chiefs and played as support as he owned part of JJ ride.

Some of the current drivers are too young to remember Jeff's dominance in the sport

Cale Yarborough wasn’t on the list? He was pretty good. Over the span of his 31-year NASCAR career, he won 15% of the races he entered and finished in the top 10 almost 60% of the time.

He also won at least one race every year from 1973 to 1985.

You make a fair point, but if the poll includes Petty, Pearson, and (I’m guessing) Earnhardt Sr then I’d say it’s not applicable to this instance.

If not for the chase Gordon would have 7 championships, adding titles in 2004, 2007, and 2014, a full 19 years after his first title, which I believe would be the widest year range of titles for any NASCAR driver. Certainly the widest range of any 7 timer. Without the chase Johnson would drop from 7 titles to 3, which would tie him with Harvick, who would himself pick up two to go with his current one.

The real irony is NASCAR created this chase nonsense to make the end of the season more interesting, and while it’s true some of the seasons would have been runaways (Harvick by 285 points in 2010, Gordon by 353 points in 2007), staying with the old format would have also produced some of the closest seasons in NASCAR history. Only four seasons would have been decided before the final round and two would have been decided by less than ten points.

It’s more that he struggled with the chase format. He won 35 events in the chase era (seven wins in 2007 alone), and if not for the format change would have picked up another three titles. Just couldn’t put it together at the end of the year for the chase.

Okay. I was excited for the chase when it was new, but looking back after 15 or so years now, it probably would have been better left unchanged. Although now I don't really even watch much at all anymore. Thanks for ungraying me!

50% of a crew chiefs job is to figure out how to cheat and get away with it, it's part of the game. Ray Evernham once said he gets concerned if they don't fail tech the first time through because it means he wasn't pushing the envelope far enough.

Yep 100% that’s a great point. When he first heard of the chase , he thought it was a joke. Still is a joke in my book

And true but his first 10 years 58 wins. And 35 in his final 12 years. Still strong numbers but true the Chase format hurt him. He wasn’t good at Miami and got his win only Winston (have no what the top series is called now) win there in 2012.

Yep. Fuck the Chase. It’s not a playoff based sport.

I think the Iceman Terry Labonte currently holds the record between first and last championships at like 12 seasons but Johnson may have eclipsed that.

Johnson’s span 10 years (2006-2016). Terry is 12 years, like you said. Earnhardt is 13 years (1980-1994).  Richard Petty is 14 years (1964-1979).
